Loophole

Donor-Advised Fund Bunching

Front-load multi-year giving into one tax year to clear the standard deduction.

Overview

Post-TCJA, most households can't itemize because the standard deduction ($29K joint) exceeds their annual SALT + charitable + mortgage total. Bunching solves it: contribute 3–5 years of planned giving to a DAF in one year — clear the itemization threshold and capture full deductions — then take the standard deduction in off years while granting from the DAF on your normal schedule.

Best fit
Regular charitable donorsPost-TCJA itemization-loss householdsCharitable retirees
Estimated impact
$5K–$50K extra federal deduction over 5-year cycle
